PRIZE GIVING

July's Bandit of the Month was finally captured -  and what a catch. He was caught red handed with both The Bennett Cup and The Bill Graves Trophy - see below.

The August Medal was won by Kevin Timms

The Gavin Brown Trophy by Robbie Robinson

...and (hot from the course) The Summer Singles Matchplay was won by Alex Tyrell

Congratulations to all of the prize winners.

The Captains Prizes from The Charity Open (lessons with our golf professionals) have been awarded to Dave Stone and Dave Butler. Unfortunately neither was present to receive their award today BUT like the August Bandit of the Month (Barry Holmes) they will be caught up with. Barry's crime was to card a net 59 in a 'friendly' round this month. What a Bandit!

Tuesday 25 August 2015

Tues. 25th. August 2015

Result of today's GAVIN BROWN TROPHY

Division 1
                James Barnatt - 72 (CB)
                Mike Smith -    72

Division 2
                Gerry Collier - 72
                Colin Baker -   73

Division 3
                John Robinson -          72
                Martin Buckingham - 77

With 4 players carding a net 72 the first stage (and the only one needed) of deciding the overall winner is to deduct half of each players full handicap from their inward 9 total.
On this basis, the winner of the trophy is John Robinson. Congratulations to Robbie.

Home match v Shrivenham

If you can find a bookmaker to offer you odds on the result of our next match I suggest you place a tidy sum on a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 win for the opposition.
You guessed it, for the 7th. time this year we were beaten by the above score.
Good conditions for golf, a very nice meal and good company make the result a little easier to accept!
Thank you to all of the Witney members who made the occasion a success.

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE - ANSWERS FROM YOU!

The first in a series of 'real life' incidents that have been reported by Seniors Members.

Test your knowledge or find out the answer, then listen to the 'official' version at the next Prize Giving.

No. 1 - At the 7th. hole Cliff pushed his drive into the ditch (a lateral hazard) running along the right- hand side of the fairway - this had never happened before!
The ball was lying quite well and there was every chance of being able to play it out and advance some way down the fairway. He went into the ditch, being careful not to ground his club and addressed the ball. In the backswing of his shot his club brushed an overhanging branch. Within the rules of golf what is the ruling about that?

No. 2 - On the 5th. hole Alan's ball went into a fairway bunker - this was only the second time this had ever happened!
When Alan arrived at the bunker he found that his ball was lying against a significant mound of sand. The mound was on the club side of the ball as he addressed it. Within the rules of golf was there anything he could do to help his situation?

3 or 4 Things

  • Both the tee times for next Tuesday's Summer Stableford - Round 5 and the team sheet for next Thursday's match v Shrivenham are now published on the relevant pages. I apologise for the lateness of this information.
  • Mike Steward left a club on the course during the Charity Open last Tuesday which hasn't come to light yet. It is a distinct green shafted 3 iron which has probably been picked up and then forgotten about, in somebody's bag. Does anybody know of it's whereabouts?
  • A new member, Phil Hoffler, is looking for playing partners next week in order to compile cards for a handicap. If you are not playing in the Summer Stableford on Tuesday or the match on Thursday and would be able to go round with Phil, then please let me know a.s.a.p.

Tues. 4th. August 2015

Result of today's match at Bicester:

Perhaps losing 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 isn't so bad after all. Today's team of stalwarts managed to lose 1 1/2 to 4 1/2, Dave Williams and Bill Ford being our only winning pair.
Once again a very enjoyable golfing occasion and once again thank you to all those who took part.

Sign Up Sheets

There is a new sign up sheet on our notice board for the next round of the Summer Stableford.

Some members have expressed the opinion that the sign up sheets should be on the 'old' notice board in the changing room.
This board is not big enough for all of our notices and the Committee's opinion is that as everyone has to come into the Sports Bar to sign in for each competition it should be the most straightforward arrangement to use the 'new' one upstairs.
The last 'sign up' for the August medal was straightforward and I thank all the members for making it so.
