Results from the 3s, 4s and 5s Team Stableford played today, plus other info ...

SECOND: Mike Smith, Alex Tyrell and Geoff Mills (78)

Notices.

I still require players to make up the team to play Carswell at Witney on the 24th March. Please sign up on the appropriate sheet on the Sports Bar notice board.

I also need players for the away match against Kirtlington on the 29th March. Sign-up sheet will appear in the next couple of days.

Please, please please make every attempt this season to avoid slow play. There are numerous hints and tips on websites. Please click on the link below.

A few hints and tips to avoid slow play

My observations about reducing slow play are these.

On the tee.

If the way is clear don't stand around chattering, using modern aids for finding distances, eating, on the 'phone, peeing, etc. Just get on and drive the ball with your mates spotting where it might have landed.

Mark your card from the previous hole when you are waiting for your mates to drive off.

Stop posturing on how you propose to hit the ball. Use one practice swing, address the ball and hit it - yes it's just that simple.

On the fairway.

As you approach your ball you should have already decided what club you are going to use, and how you are going to play the ball. Leave the rangefinder in the bag (or even better at home). Remember practice swing, address the ball and hit it. Don't spend the next 30 seconds thinking about getting the right vibes before hitting it.

Hit your ball and remember where it lies before helping others to find their balls. Remember the 5 minute rule when looking for balls.

Always play a provisional ball if you think the first is lost. Don't waste time in walking back to play the provisional.

In a Stableford match if you don't stand any chance of scoring pick the ball up and move on to the next hole.

On the green.

Position your bag, trolley or buggy on the exit path to the next hole.

Don't waste valuable time working out the geometry of your shot posturing with your putter in the crucifix position. Make a judgement about distance, pace and borrow and hit the ball. Once again don't go into suspended animation for 30 seconds before you putt the ball - we might think rigor mortis has set in early!

Don't mark your scorecard on or around the green, wait until the next tee.

Finally, if you are holding up the group behind and have no group playing in front of you then please let the group through, especially on the call-up holes.

The week ahead ...

Remember there will be maintenance on the greens starting on Monday 14th for 3 days.

Tuesday 15th March - Roll-up 3s, 4s and 5s Stableford TEAM game - first come first out basis. What happened to the Hot Toddy Game you ask? Answer - postponed until May owing to green maintenance.

Committee members - please remember there will be a meeting in the Sports Bar after the game.

Thursday 17th March - Winter Stableford Round 5 (last in series). Tee times will appear after Monday 14th when I have had time to sort them out.

I am still looking to form a winning team of golfers to do battle with our friends from The Carswell Club on Thursday 24th March. Please see the sign-up sheet on the notice board in the Sports Bar. I need at least 15 players, so that I can select a team of 12 with 3 in reserve.

Thursday 10 March 2016

Results from the Texas Scramble played today over 10 holes ...

First: James Barnatt, Ron Feasey and Andy Wright (27.95)
Second: Bill Ford, Cliff Smith and Alan Jones (28.1)

Further news and information ...

As a result of the limited access to the course today the U-Boat second round was postponed. I am therefore proposing that the U Boat Semi-Finals are moved to Tuesday 19th April, and the final is played on the 10th May.

All U-Boat Round 2 matches should now be played NO LATER than Tuesday 12th April.

I notice from the Golf Club Diary (for those lucky enough to have one) that maintenance on the greens will start on Monday 14th March for 3 days. In view of this I propose to move the Hot Toddy Trophy, due to be played next week, to Tuesday 17th May. Hopefully the course will be in a fit condition for us all to play some reasonable golf! As for Tuesday 15th March we will play a roll up 3s, 4s and 5s Stableford team game.

An important amendment to the LOCAL Winter Rules of golf ...

WINTER RULES

These additional Local Rules apply when 'Winter Rules' are in force.

1. Embedded Ball (In accordance with Rules Of Golf Appendix 1A-3a).

Through the green, a ball that is embedded may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.

Note: A ball is “embedded” when it is in its own pitch-mark and part of the ball is below the level of the ground. A ball does not necessarily have to touch the soil to be embedded (e.g. grass, loose impediments and the like may intervene between the ball and the soil).

Exceptions:
1. A player may not take relief under this Local Rule if the ball is embedded in sand in an area that is not closely-mown.

2. A player may not take relief under this Local Rule if interference by anything other than the condition covered by this Local Rule makes the stroke clearly impracticable.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

2. Preferred Lies (In accordance with Rules Of Golf Appendix 1A-3b).

A ball lying on a closely-mown area through the green may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he must place it on a spot within six inches of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.

A player may place his ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed (Rule 20-4). If the ball fails to come to rest on the spot on which it was placed, Rule 20-3d applies. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and it subsequently moves, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply.

If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it, moves the ball-marker prior to putting the ball back into play or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, he incurs a penalty of one stroke.

Note: “Closely-mown area” means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

*PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

*If a player incurs the general penalty for a breach of this Local Rule, no additional penalty under the Local Rule is applied.

3. Cleaning Ball (In accordance with Rules Of Golf Appendix 1A-3c).

Anywhere through the green a ball may be lifted and cleaned without penalty. The ball must be replaced.

Note: The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted under this Local Rule – see Rule 20-1.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE:

Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

Reminder. On Thursday 10th March we have a roll-up Texas Scramble TEAM game. Teams of three players will be grouped in the order you sign in. Please note that Tee Times from 9.00am to 9.20am will be reserved for those playing the second round of the U-Boat tournament. Your roll-up times are therefore 8.00-8.56 am and 9.28-10.00am.

First: Mike Smith, Alex Tyrell, Bob Harvey  131 points
Second: Doug Keen, Mike Dawson, Bill Ford  122 points

Unless Brian/James are feeling very generous, prizes are only awarded to the top two teams.
