Monday 31 December 2018

So I hope you all had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas and are ready for the New Year. Or perhaps you enjoyed yourself instead.

On Thursday we have a Teesing Stableford Roll Up to ease us into the new year. I am going to take a relaxing break in the West Country for the next couple of days. Getting over the turkey and grandchildren, (eating one playing with the other).

So the sign up sheet is posted up in the changing rooms already and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Kevin

Friday 21 December 2018

So I hope you all enjoyed the day yesterday, I know I did. I got the club selection wrong and putted like a fool but apart from that ........

Winners yesterday

Div 1 Winner Alex Tyrell with 37 Second Bob Kirkwood with 36

Div 2 Winner Cliff Smith with 32 Second Eric Wearing with 31

So thats the end of the calendar year but only 2 months of the golfing year so no time to rest on your laurels.

Whos going to take the "Bandit of the Year" award away from Mr Watt there surely are a number of fancied candidates in the over 28 handicap section.

Next organised golf will be Thursday 3rd January 2019 but keep on practicing

MERRY CHRISTMAS
but most of all
A PROSPEROUS AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR

Kevin

Wednesday 19 December 2018

So its 3 clubs and a putter and starting from tee 1 and 10 so that we can get together after the game and have a prize giving. I'll have the sign up sheet and will be there 8 (ish)
To improve the situation even more I notice that the club are offering a complimentary mince pie and mulled wine and Brian is offering a bowl of chips for each 3 ball.
LUXURY!!!!

So nearest the pin prizes aplenty and a reasonable looking morning I'll see you all tomorrow

Kevin

Tuesday 18 December 2018

What a day, I hope all you late starters got in before the rain started. I didn't see the actual time as I was sat indoors having a nice hot chocolate. But every man to his own I say and I certainly wouldn't want to spoil your fun. I played 9 holes with the group that has affectionately become known as the Old Geezers (at last by me) and interestingly I was the youngest by around 10 years

So 21 played today and from the scores I can see you all struggled with the conditions that is with the notable exception of Mr Gent. Results below.

So I hope you all saw Rods email from earlier today the only thing to add is that we do almost have a two tee start and there will be refreshments available after the game. What more can a man ask for?

Friday 14 December 2018

A lovely sunny day but crikey that wind was cold

4 UBoat games but I didn't get the result of the first two out on the course yet, everyone had gone by the time we got in. It was about an hour later when I had thawed out and realised.

So all first round matches (and one second round) before Christmas, Well Done

The next round is scheduled for January

Te rest of us played a Stableford game won by Paddy Marcks with 37 points  and Tony Ward with 34 second on countback.

Next Tuesday is round 3 of the Winter Stableford which we hold as a Roll Up as that seems to work OK at this time of year,

Next Thursday is three clubs and a putter, the last game of this year and we will try and arrange a two tee start and hold our final Prize Giving of the year. We dont seem to have had a prize giving for ages.

Wednesday 12 December 2018

So are you all ready

Tomorrow is the big day for all you UBoaters, all the matches I'm aware of are on the Tee time web site. I couldn't find a email for Alex I hope its all OK.

For the rest of us its a Roll Up Stableford and we should just fill in the spare slots as best we can. It might be an idea to play in groups of 4 so that the pace can match the matches more easily. As I say in these circumstances Up To You

The sheet is up in the Sports Bar for all you early starters

Tuesday 11 December 2018

A lovely sunny day today, greens a bit slow to start but as soon as they dried out everything going honky dory.

Anyone know where honky dory originates, I am sure some of you are old enough to remember it

Anyway winner today Peter Cartwright with 17
Second Barry Lund with 18 and
Third (on countback) John Alexander with 19

Thursday currently has 3 UBoat games scheduled. The playing order can be found on the Tee Time sheet. For the rest of us its a Roll Up Individual Stableford game

Monday 10 December 2018

So I know all you golfers are getting excited, only 15 more sleeps till the big day. But still Golf to be played

I think we'll play Erics game again tomorrow, we did have Erics game two weeks ago but the weather was so bad only 6 turned up. The weather tomorrow looks good(ish) maybe not so good Thursday but still not bad.

Only 0ne first round UBoat match not signed up for Thursday I'll bring the list tomorrow

I am going Christmas Shopping today with Mrs Timms so I may not get tomorrows sign up sheet posted in the sports bar tonight. They can be very tiring days and I may be in trouble by tea time.
If its not in the sports bar tonight I'll be there 8 or soon after in the morning

Thursday 6 December 2018

I hope you all enjoyed the game today and that the Roll Up format worked well. I had a lovely time at the dentist in the warm and dry.

Congratulations to Rod coming back and winning, it just shows what happens when the heavy burdens of captaincy are lifted.

I'll post something about next weeks games when I have worked out what they are, but don't forget UBoat Round 1 outstanding matches must be played before Christmas

Full Result and Playing Handicap changes

Wednesday 5 December 2018

Good Morning Gentlemen golfers of West Oxfordshire

Several things to get through today so I will go in the order they happen

27 played in the Yellow Ball roll up yesterday a pretty pleasant day but getting to be wet under foot. The greens were frosty and pretty inconsistent at the start but had sorted themselves out by 10:30

Winners were John Watt, Brian Rollerson and Graham Simpson with 143 points
second were Ken Gregory Barry Lund and myself with less (a lot less)

Six heroes (several of whom are pre war) played 9 holes and there game was won by Ron Deacon.

Just an aside to the 9 holers if Ron keeps winning someone will need to nobble him

Tomorrow's weather forecast is looking rather poor (but so was todays and it doesn't look too bad as I sit here). Already people are contacting me with can I put them in and contacting me with can I scrub them and thats before I've even produced the start sheet
SO TOMORROWS MEDAL IS A ROLL UP
That should eliminate the need to juggle the tee times in the morning. I'll post the sheet in the Sports Bar later today

I wont be playing tomorrow ( ask Doug Keen he knows why) but I think Rod will be back.
Tomorrow should be a qualifier but the course is set up pretty short at the moment and someone needs to make a decision about if it is OK.

Last but not least only half the UBoat matches were played in November, that is OK we still have time to catch up but that is scheduled for next Thursday the FIRST ROUND GAMES MUST BE PLAYED BY CHRISTMAS

See you all next week

Monday 3 December 2018

So, last Thursday was a bit of a wash out, actually not a wash out more a gale off.

So 6 brave? souls managed 18 2 managed 9 and 2 managed 3

132 holes of very windy golf

Tomorrow is another team game
YELLOW BALL
I will be there soon after 8 with the start sheet and if we can select the teams like we did last time that seemed to work well

So first 9 there draw out the first 3 games and then the next 9 and so on

Of course if the turn out is like last week..........?

Its the December Medal on Thursday dont forget to get your name on the sign up sheet which is on the notice board in the Sports Bar

Wednesday 28 November 2018

I looked at the program and tomorrow is a Prize Giving Day so I have organised a two tee start from 8:30

I watched the lunch time weather forecast and now I'm not quite so sure

However if you like playing golf with gales and rain, tomorrow could be your big day.

I have set up a start sheet for Erics Game using first and tenth tees and I will be in the sports bar drinking coffee and wishing you a good game as you set off from just after 8:00

I'm off to mend my trolley and umbrella now just in case I get tempted

Tuesday 27 November 2018

Several days ago I wrote

Never forget you are doing this because you enjoy it.

Today I discussed this with several people and it turns out that no one is quite sure why we do it but it definitely is not because we enjoy it.

So the first day of winter and it had everything except snow, that bitter east wind blew my umbrella 150 yards down the 16th fairway. My drive went further but not as straight.

So congratulations to Alex Tyrell who with 38 beat the other 9 stalwarts by at least 5 shots.

The 9 hole game was played by 6 plucky old timers and Ken Gregory. Richard Brown won with 19 points

Three UBoat matches were played five to go in round 1

You've all done very well

Monday 26 November 2018

A cold day today but a nice day, tomorrow who knows?

There are 3 matches booked for the UBoat the times will be posted on the Tee time page soon.

For the rest of us its an Individual Teesing Stableford game. One novelty the Tees are Red Yellow White but played in any order as long as you play 6 of each.
If you are playing in a 3 ball you can play from the same tees or different tees from your playing partners. Its up to you.

I know its something else to think about during your game and thats asking a lot, but so far on the two Teesing games we have played at least one group has played in the wrong order each time. So lets see what happens with this version

I am pretty sure there will be enough for a 9 hole game as well

See you tomorrow

Kevin

Thursday 22 November 2018

So it was all a bit chilly, I didn't manage to finish the round I got too cold and when the fog came down I'd had enough.

It was a difficult day all round with changes from Tuesday evenings original play list. 4 cried off and 2 were added before this morning and 4 didn't show today some managed to contact us and say they couldn't make it but not all.

There is a sign up sheet for the December Medal on the board I'll monitor the changes when that happens and then the committee will have to decide if we adopt a roll up for all winter games or introduce some  penalty for no shows.

Results as below and be aware that there has been a review of handicaps and you need to check for any changes

Wednesday 21 November 2018

I'm sure a warm welcome awaits you in the Sports Bar tomorrow morning where you can read the start times for round 2 of the Winter Stableford before freezing your bits out on the course.

Never forget you are doing this because you enjoy it.

Tuesday 20 November 2018

So a very cold day at the Lakes, congratulations to all who managed to play in a biting ENE wind, at least it didn't rain until after we had finished.

So Thursdays Tee times will be available on the Tee time sheet soon.  Todays winners were Bob Kirkwood, John Watt and Peter Burdon who managed 70 points between them beating Brian Rollersons team on countback.

Only 5 9 holers managed to play today so no prize and no charge as this was below the 6 player threshold we set up. I hope you enjoyed it'

Lets hope Thursday is a lot warmer

I've just remembered, whoever left there shoes behind today in the sports bar Bob Kirkwood took them home to keep them safe and will bring them back Thursday. If you have other plans for them let me know

Saturday 17 November 2018

The winter approaches and cold mornings are on there way so for Tuesday we will follow our usual  practice and are going on to 8:30 First Tee which we will continue to use for the winter months

Tuesday we will play a Reverse Bowmaker which is a Team Game for Teams of 3 Players
Rules will be available Tuesday for those of you who don't know it.

To get the teams we will draw names from a hat, so as soon as we have 9 players there after 8:00, we will draw the first 3 teams, after that we will repeat the exercise for every 9 players, so that no-one hangs around too long.

Also Tuesday we will have the UBoat draw on  the board and a sign up sheet to allow you to book a tee time for your match a week Tuesday

Thursday 15 November 2018

A beeyutiful day today we surely will have to pay the price at sometime this winter.
Although the entry screen was working eventually I know a number of you were already on the course and so didn't enter your scores so results from the cards as follows
15 Nov
Div 1 1st Mike Twyman 39 points 2nd John Alexander 37 points (on countback)
Div 2 1st Jim Whalley 42 points 2nd Peter Cartwright 38 points

Today there were 16 div1 and 13 div2 playing so no change to the boundaries yet but we will keep it under review.

6 played in the 9 hole roll up and Ron Deacon was the winner.

We drew the first round matches for the UBoat today and I'll post that later today.

Next week we will have a roll up team game on Tuesday and I am currently waiting for confirmation that we will switch to an  8:30 First Tee time for the winter months. Information to come as soon as I have it.

Dont forget to sign up for the Winter Stableford Round 2, on the notice board in the Sports Bar, the entry list looks a bit thin at the moment

Kevin

Wednesday 14 November 2018

I'm a bit late with yesterdays result, I have been out on Grandparent duty all day and only just got back. I'd just like to assure you that nothing comes before my efforts to smooth the furrowed brow of you seniors, except all my grandchildren. Who would have guessed?

So congratulations to yesterdays winner Paddy Marcks with a 73, definitely not a day for low scoring although we did have a lot of time gathering around on each of the tees to discuss it.

Play was very slow.

As you will see from the results there were a lot more Div1 players than Div2., if that pattern repeats itself over the next games we will have to re set the boundry between the divisions. More to follow soon

Tomorrow is a Roll Up Stableford and the start sheet is in the changing rooms. Dont forget I am going to draw the UBoat pairings tomorrow, so make sure your name is down

Friday 9 November 2018

I've finally had five minutes to sort out where I am this week and can back to my number one priority, looking after the Gentlemen of Witney Lakes Seniors.

So the result from Tuesdays Roll Up Stableford  were much as given by Rod earlier but after an impassioned appeal by Doug Keen I realised it should be two divisions not one but with only twp prizes in each division

So Division 1 winner Peter Burden and second Chris Hatherley

Division 2 winner Barry Lund and second Cliff Smith

Yesterday we played in a Texas Scramble and after some very low scoring golf
Winners were Rod Rapley, Malcolm Saunders and Terry Edmunds with 59.5 Nett
Second Mike Smith Alex Tyrell and Geoff Mills with 63.9

I managed 18 holes for the first time in a long time and Mike Twyman and and Rod Booles were kind enough to get us round in third place with 65.2 but with only 33 playing no prizes for third place.

We had our first Committee meeting yesterday and have decided on our charity for 2018/19 which is Maggies Center a cancer respite center on the Churchill site in Oxford and our charity hole which will be the 18th (yes the 18th) more details to follow soon.

Tuesday is the November Medal which we have kept as a roll up as an experiment and the Tee Time  sheet will be posted in the changing room sometime Monday

Dont forget to put in your U Boat entries as the draw will be next Thursday

Kevin

Tuesday 6 November 2018

So I'm still in catch up mode, not helped by the fact that the game entered on Intelligent Golf didn't work today I'm not sure why I couldn't see anything wrong

As a result I dont have todays result yet unless I get it before Thursday I'll sort it out then.

However I did get the cards for last Thursday. There was some discrepancy over which order the Tees were played last Thursday (there always is) I have suggested that in future we let people play them in any order they like as long as they play 6 of each colour. Some think that will be too complex for our simple brains and all the evidence I have to date confirms that to be true. We Shall See.

Anyway all the people with the best scores also managed to play the tees in the correct order so that was lucky

Winner Div 1 John Alexander 66 second Dave Williams 68 (on countback).

Winner Div 2 Richard Gent 72 second Brian Floyd 76

Thursday is a Texas Scramble Roll Up and the start sheet will be in the changing rooms sometime tomorrow

Kevin

Monday 5 November 2018

Gentlemen (and others)

Tomorrow is a Roll Up Stableford, its non qualifying but please enter on the system and put your results on to the computer as that makes the result easier to sort out.

The start sheet is on the Sports Bar notice board as I wasn't able to get into the changing rooms to put it there.

For those interested there will also be a 9 hole competition starting as soon as the other games are under way

Afternoon Golfers Everywhere

I'm giving Rod a break for 3 months so he can recharge his batteries ready for next years exciting golf programme at Witney Lakes.

I'm just setting up my email addresses etc so until I get that done its going to be a bit hand to mouth.

Tomorrow is a Teesing Strokeplay Roll Up for those braving 18 holes in what looks like slightly dodgy conditions, the sign up sheet is in the changing rooms.

For those of us only ready for 9 holes (me included as my hip is still not fully working) a 9 hole sign up sheet is in the sports bar ( I already know its got the wrong date on it so don't bother telling me), get your names on it and I'll be there around 8:30 ish to make sure its all working (sort of)
