Monday 28 December 2015

The week ahead ...

This week we have two roll-up games.

Tuesday 29th December is a 3s 4s and 5s game.

This is a Stableford game played in TEAMS OF THREE, off full handicap.

All three team members score on the par 3s. Use the best scores for any two team members on the par 4s. Use the best score for one team member on the par 5s
The scorecard must show the gross scores & stableford points for each player, the total for the hole and the final total for 18 holes.

Thursday 31st December is a Teesing Stableford game.

This is an INDIVIDUAL Stableford played off WHITE/YELLOW/RED tees in that order, using the yellow stroke index for the red tees.
Owing to the fact that it will be New Years Eve there are limited tee times. Start at 8.00am last tee time 8.56am.

FOOTNOTE.

THOSE GOLFERS WHO HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED ROUND 1 OF THE U-BOAT TROPHY MIGHT LIKE TO ORGANISE AND PLAY YOUR MATCHES ASAP PLEASE. THE LIST OF TEAMS IS SHOWN ON THE MATCHES TAB OF THIS WEBSITE.

Tuesday 22 December 2015

Results from the Christmas Bash held today ...

In the match play the Tigers won 6 games to 3.
Clearly some of the rabbits that won need their handicaps reviewing in the New Year!

The nearest the pin prizes (£5 will be credited to your M&S card) go to the following players:

Green 6 - Ron Feasey
Green 8 - Mike Smith
Green 12 - James Barnatt
Green 15 - Terry Edmunds

Well done to all for doing battle in such windy conditions. At least we didn't get wet.

Congratulations to Paddy Marcks for getting a hole-in-one playing in an informal game yesterday. Paddy has kindly made a donation to the Captain's Charity.

Have a Happy Christmas - and let's hope we all have an enjoyable golfing year for 2016.

Just a reminder - no organised golf on Christmas Eve.
We have roll ups organised for next week - 29th and 31st December.

Thursday 17 December 2015

The week ahead ...

Christmas Bash – Tuesday 22nd December

This is a Stroke Match Play with ¾ handicap difference.

Tee 1         Tigers                                vs                 Rabbits

08:00 Holmes (20) & Watt (21)                    Harvey (27) & Deacon (28)
08:10 Edmunds (7) & Marcks (18)               Hale (21) & Collier (21)
08:20 Saunders (19) & Tyrell (15)                Wearing (21) & Buckingham (28)
08:30 Wright (19) & Lake (19)                     Long (22) & Butler (28)
08:40 Kirkwood (15) & Gent (21)                 Robinson (26) & Lund (26)

Tee 10        Tigers                               vs                  Rabbits

08:00 Barnatt (15) & Keen (22)                    Baker (22) & Sheehan (28)
08:10 Smith (15) & Feasey (21)                    Rollerson (22) & Tidy (28)
08:20 Steward (17) & Laban (18)                 Dawson (25) & Jones (23)
08:30 Alexander (12) & Williams (15)           Black (26) & Comley (21)

The cut-off point for a tiger is a handicap of 20-21 or less. However, it has been
necessary for the odd rabbit to stray into the tiger team and vice versa in order to attempt to balance the games.

I don't expect it to be a walkover for the tigers since there are some right bandits amongst the rabbits – but we shall see on the day!

There will be nearest-the-pin challenges on ALL par 3 holes.

After the match there will be sandwiches and team chips served in the Sports Bar. Order at the bar after you have completed your game. The cost of the match £1 and the food £2 will be deducted from your monthly subs. The remainder of the food costs will be subsidised by the Seniors' Section (after all it is Christmas).

STOP PRESS - We will also have the prize giving for November and December after the food.

Thursday 24th December. There is no formal game arranged for the seniors. However, you can still play golf - it's up to you.

Condition of the Golf Course.

I had a 'phone call from Witney Lakes GC this evening. Owing to the amount of rain we have had over the last few days the condition of the course is poor.

I have been advised that Steve Putt will make a decision as to whether the course will be opened on Tuesday 15th December. Please 'phone reception on 01993-893011 after 7.45 am as to whether the course is open.

If the course is open, and I have enough numbers, I will still run the Texas Scramble, however the start may be delayed.

If the wet whether persists I will have to re-schedule the remainder of the games up to Christmas. Watch this space for more info.

Oh the joy of wet weather golf!  Barry H.

In view of today's weather forecast very few rolled up to play the an individual

Friday 6 November 2015

The week ahead

On Tuesday 10th November we have the monthly medal - stroke play off the white tees.

The tee times for this event are posted on this website and also on the notice board in the Sports Bar.

On Thursday 12th November sees the re-introduction of 'Whack and Hack" as the roll-up game. When you roll up to the Sports Bar, put a card in to James with your name on it, teams of three will be chosen from the cards.

In case you have forgotten the rules of Whack and Hack here is a reminder.

Teams of THREE members will play a STROKE PLAY game with handicap adjustment on each hole, so that only nett scores will be used.  In Whack and Hack, the three team members each play their own ball for three individual nett scores. Two of those scores are combined to make up the team score on each hole.

The two nett scores that are used are the lowest and the highest. So if the three players score 4, 5 and 6 respectively, the team score is 10 (4 + 6).

But there's an exception! If the lowest score for the team is a nett birdie or better, then the team gets to use its two lowest scores on that hole.

The completed card must show the score for each player and the combined score for each hole, together with the final total. Remember to include the handicap of each player.

The lowest final total for the match is the winner. Ties will be resolved on the number of nett birdies or better.

Tuesday 3 November 2015

Results from the Bowmaker team game played today

FIRST: Doug Keen, Barry Lund and Dinger Long (85)
SECOND: Richard Gent, Bob Kirkwood and John Courtney (83)

Just a reminder that when you roll up for a team game please see you have a team on the sign-up sheet before leaving the Sports Bar otherwise you will be disqualified before you even start the game. In other words don't leave gaps on the sheet.

Monday 2 November 2015

The week ahead.

This week we have two roll ups, a Bowmaker on Tuesday and yes, Eric's Game again on Thursday. Now we are moving towards Winter tee times, we will start at 8.00 am. Please don't get there too early since I won't open up the Sports Bar until about 7.50 am. Last week there were queues at 7.50 am, so much so that these people didn't often get a tee time until after 8.30 am. Have an extra half hour in bed and try and spread your arrival over the first hour to alleviate queueing!

As this is the start of the month Brian will be very pleased to receive your subs. This system of collecting game fees works extremely well and I would urge the odd one or two of you who don't pay monthly to give it a go. Believe me Brian keeps a very accurate record of the money received.

If you haven't already signed up for the monthly medal and the U-Boat tournament and you want to play in these games please put your name on the sign up sheets on the notice board in the Sports Bar.

Enjoy your golf!

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE - ANSWERS FROM YOU! - Part 2

No. 1 - There are currently some significant areas of sand around the fringes of some of the greens. In one of these areas a trolley or buggie wheel had pushed the sand into a small pile. X's ball came to rest against this pile of sand on the side of the pile away from the green. Being only 12 ft. from the pin, X was keen to put. Within the rules of golf how was he able to proceed?

No. 2 - Dave hit his shot to the very brink of the righthand fairway bunker on the 13th. When he arrived there he found his ball resting against the the end of a rake handle, the rest of the rake being in the bunker. On moving the rake his ball rolled into the bunker. Within the Rules of Golf how was he able to proceed?

No.3 - Mike hit his tee shot at the 6th. into the gorse bush by the path, adjacent to the 'to the 7th.' sign. The ball was quite visible and he had a good chance of being able to play out of the bush. On taking his normal stance his right foot was on the path. Within the rules of golf how was he able to proceed?

No. 4 - Malcolm hit his ball onto the 'Edmunds Bridge' on the 18th. were it came to rest. Somebody said it was his 4th. shot but I can't believe that! Within the rules of golf how was he able to proceed?

Result of today's Ryderless Cup

After an early surge, the Vice-captain's team was pegged back by the Captain's team in the second half of the field so that the final result was an honourable tie. The event appeared to be very much enjoyed by everybody. Perhaps we should have other similar occasions.

Prizegiving

Last month's bandit (Barry Holmes) was finally brought to heel:

......but unfortunately nobody of a similar calibre could be found to fit the prestigous hat this month .

This is the scorecard for 'Barry the Bandit' that cut his handicap from 23.7 to 19.6.

Also from last month, our latest 'hole in one' expert (Alan Jones) was awarded with his trophy:

Mike Smith received the September Medal:

and John Watt received The Wilf Shirley Trophy:

Congratulations to all of the above.

Other matters raised at Prizegiving included:
  • Vice-captain Barry has been able to commit to taking on the captaincy but with the previso that he will need to relinquish the position as and when his house move is underway. When this latter situaution occurs we may need to consider alternative models for running the section. Other members who may be able to help with elements of the work involved (e.g. organising matches or running Tuesday or Thursday events) are asked to speak to current committee members. In any case nominations for key positions on next year's committee are urgently required - including a Handicap Secretary (someone who can look a computer in the eye).
  • Two of our Air Ambulance collecting tins were opened today revealing a sum of £230. Thank you to all those of you who have been hitting your tee shots (and other shots) into the lake at the 8th. I am hoping to raise another £200 by the end of October from: A - more shots into the lake; B - a second go at Terry Edmunds putting competition on Thur. 15th. October and C - the sale of a 4 ball voucher for Witney Lakes. If you can use this please see me a.s.a.p.
  • The company will be introducing a new membership deal for those over the age of 80. I have been informed that a 5 day membership will cost £399 but have no information about 7 day membership at present. If this is of interest to you then contact Nicola at the club whose email is: membership@witney-lakes.co.uk
  • The 'sign up' sheet, with menu choices, for our Presentation Evening is on the notice board.
  • Our A.G.M. is on Wed. 28th. October.

Sunday 27 September 2015

The draw has been made and the tee times are published. There are 36 members involved at present but we have tee times that could accomodate another 8. Roll Up - Bowmaker Team Game

  • There are currently 2 sign up sheets on the notice board for members attention. One is for the Ryderless Cup on Tues. 29th. Sept. which is also Prize Day.
  • The nomination form for the members of next years committee is also on the notice board. As indicated on the form there are crucial positions that need to be filled by 'new faces' if the section is to continue in it's present manner. Please urgently consider either standing for, or nominating someone to serve on, next years committee.

Correction

The result in division 3 of last Thursday's Individual Stableford was incorrectly published.

Fairways Update

Those of you who have been at the club today will certainly know that work has started on the damaged fairways. The very wet conditions mean that they look even more like a battlefield than expected. Clearly this is a temporary, essential situation that we have to cope with.
In the existing circumstances Steve Putt has requested (required) that we tee up on the areas under repair.
If there are damaged areas on which the scarifying machine has not yet been used then our 'pick and place' rule will still apply.
The fairways in question are: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 13th. and 18th.

Roger Hinton

In his own words, he hopes that this will not become a trend but like Pat Smith, Roger has very reluctantly cancelled his golf club membership. Roger has been a Seniors Section member for some 18 years and sends all his fellow golfers his very best wishes and hopes for the continued success of the section. On behalf of the members I have wished Roger "all the best" and hope that we will still see him in the Sports Bar.
Rogers' email is: rogandmag@aol.com

Summer Stableford -Round 6 (the final round)

Thursday 17th. September

Work begins on the damaged fairways this week. We will continue to operate our 'pick and place within 1 club length, not nearer the hole' local rule. N. B. this applies to the 1st. fairway as well as the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 13th. and 18th.

Pat Smith

I had a very nice message from Pat explaining that because of his ongoing medical problem he had found it necessary to cancel his membership of the golf club. He wished everybody well. I replied on behalf of the section but Pat's email is: patrick.smudge10@gmail.com

Groundstaff Report
Martin Burbanks has informed me of the following:

  • Mon. 7th. September - Hollow tining and sanding of the greens will begin on Mon. 7th. as per the diary and will procede for 4 days. This is why we have our away day and an away match this week.
  • Mon. 14th. September - Scarifying of the damaged fairways to take out the dead 'thatch' will begin on Mon. 14th. and may procede all week. Martin describes this work as "quite vigorous" such that the fairways will look more damaged at this stage.
  • Mon 21st. September - Overseeding of the damaged areas of the fairways will begin on Mon. 21st. and may procede all week.
Once the fairways have been seeded, for a period of 2/3weks, Martin will be asking all golfers who use the course to 'tee up' on the repaired sections although this does not need to apply to boarded and medal competitions etc!!! Next week the committee will have to decide our approach to the events of the coming weeks, so if you have a point of view to share please let a committee member know.
We knew that this situation was coming and we know that it is necessary.

  • The 15th tee is in the process of being levelled and re-turfed.
  • Mon. 21st. September - Work will begin to lay paving either side of Eagle Bridge. This is expected to last 3 days.
  • Work to complete the re-shaping of the bunker to the left of the 13th. fairway will be ongoing through September.

Seniors' Golf on Tuesday 8th September

If you are not playing in the Golf Away Day then don't feel neglected as there will be a game for you at Witney as usual. 'Barry the Bandit' will organise a singles match play for all who turn up. Not too early please, I plan to get there about 8.00 am, as in the old days.

Those who arrive will be paired off to play against each other. You are playing for each hole off the yellow tees. The handicap allowance is given to the player with the highest handicap out of the pair, and is the difference between the two handicaps.

There are no prizes, no fees and no pressure, just a good morning out with your chums, as it should be.

Oh and by-the-way there will be maintenance on the greens on Tuesday, but don't let that put you off, in the past it hasn't been a problem.

See you Tuesday - VC.

PRIZE GIVING

July's Bandit of the Month was finally captured -  and what a catch. He was caught red handed with both The Bennett Cup and The Bill Graves Trophy - see below.

The August Medal was won by Kevin Timms

The Gavin Brown Trophy by Robbie Robinson

...and (hot from the course) The Summer Singles Matchplay was won by Alex Tyrell

Congratulations to all of the prize winners.

The Captains Prizes from The Charity Open (lessons with our golf professionals) have been awarded to Dave Stone and Dave Butler. Unfortunately neither was present to receive their award today BUT like the August Bandit of the Month (Barry Holmes) they will be caught up with. Barry's crime was to card a net 59 in a 'friendly' round this month. What a Bandit!

Tuesday 25 August 2015

Tues. 25th. August 2015

Result of today's GAVIN BROWN TROPHY

Division 1
                James Barnatt - 72 (CB)
                Mike Smith -    72

Division 2
                Gerry Collier - 72
                Colin Baker -   73

Division 3
                John Robinson -          72
                Martin Buckingham - 77

With 4 players carding a net 72 the first stage (and the only one needed) of deciding the overall winner is to deduct half of each players full handicap from their inward 9 total.
On this basis, the winner of the trophy is John Robinson. Congratulations to Robbie.

Home match v Shrivenham

If you can find a bookmaker to offer you odds on the result of our next match I suggest you place a tidy sum on a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 win for the opposition.
You guessed it, for the 7th. time this year we were beaten by the above score.
Good conditions for golf, a very nice meal and good company make the result a little easier to accept!
Thank you to all of the Witney members who made the occasion a success.

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE

QUESTIONS FROM THE COURSE - ANSWERS FROM YOU!

The first in a series of 'real life' incidents that have been reported by Seniors Members.

Test your knowledge or find out the answer, then listen to the 'official' version at the next Prize Giving.

No. 1 - At the 7th. hole Cliff pushed his drive into the ditch (a lateral hazard) running along the right- hand side of the fairway - this had never happened before!
The ball was lying quite well and there was every chance of being able to play it out and advance some way down the fairway. He went into the ditch, being careful not to ground his club and addressed the ball. In the backswing of his shot his club brushed an overhanging branch. Within the rules of golf what is the ruling about that?

No. 2 - On the 5th. hole Alan's ball went into a fairway bunker - this was only the second time this had ever happened!
When Alan arrived at the bunker he found that his ball was lying against a significant mound of sand. The mound was on the club side of the ball as he addressed it. Within the rules of golf was there anything he could do to help his situation?

Thursday 13 August 2015

3 or 4 Things

  • Both the tee times for next Tuesday's Summer Stableford - Round 5 and the team sheet for next Thursday's match v Shrivenham are now published on the relevant pages. I apologise for the lateness of this information.
  • Mike Steward left a club on the course during the Charity Open last Tuesday which hasn't come to light yet. It is a distinct green shafted 3 iron which has probably been picked up and then forgotten about, in somebody's bag. Does anybody know of it's whereabouts?
  • A new member, Phil Hoffler, is looking for playing partners next week in order to compile cards for a handicap. If you are not playing in the Summer Stableford on Tuesday or the match on Thursday and would be able to go round with Phil, then please let me know a.s.a.p.

I think that's all, I hope I haven't missed anybody.

I also think that we have raised in the order of £2000 for Air Ambulance.

(There are 2 unclaimed raffle prizes, ticket nos. 524 and 818. I will use these for 'future prizes' if they remain unclaimed by next week)

Perhaps losing 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 isn't so bad after all. Today's team of stalwarts managed to lose 1 1/2 to 4 1/2, Dave Williams and Bill Ford being our only winning pair.
Once again a very enjoyable golfing occasion and once again thank you to all those who took part.

Just a reminder that the charity open will be played next Tuesday. I still do not have enough prizes

Sign Up Sheets

There is a new sign up sheet on our notice board for the next round of the Summer Stableford.

Some members have expressed the opinion that the sign up sheets should be on the 'old' notice board in the changing room.
This board is not big enough for all of our notices and the Committee's opinion is that as everyone has to come into the Sports Bar to sign in for each competition it should be the most straightforward arrangement to use the 'new' one upstairs.
The last 'sign up' for the August medal was straightforward and I thank all the members for making it so.
